Holiday Photography Tips

With the holiday’s fast approaching, families will be getting together and cameras will be put to use! So, I figured now was a perfect time for me to share a few holiday photography tips so that you can get the best candid and posed photos of your loved ones.

  1. If at all possible use as much natural (window) light as possible.  Place your subject so that the light shines on them. (your back will be to the window).  Make certain that you do not block the light with your own body!

2. Do NOT force the children to smile!  Sometimes smiles are overrated and you just need to let kids be kids.

3. Saying Cheese will cause a forced smile because children tend to drag out the E.  Try having them say other other words that still include an e, but also are a little silly.  My favorite is to ask the kids if they like purple pizza and then have them ask someone else about purple pizza.

4. Remember to photograph the little things.  Does your child have a favorite toy that they like to play with at grandma’s house?  For this shot, I focused on the giant pop-tart with all the toppings that this little one was trying to pick up.

5. Capture a series of events.  Sure, we have all seen cake smashes and the progression of messiness.  This is a favorite series at weddings and birthday parties.  You can do the same thing with family events.  Break out the camera when “Uncle Bob” is telling stories about growing up.  Capture the faces of the family members as they listen and join in on the story telling.

6. Enjoy yourself!  Documenting your family memories should be fun.

  • Honestly, photographing children is the best when there is no goal in sight! Just letting them be kids is the best! Totally agree with you girl!
